| Carry a line | to follow scent well |
| Cast | Attempt to recover scent |

| Check | hounds have temporarily lost scent |
| Couple | two hounds |
| Cry | voice of a hound when on a line |
| Doe | female Hare |
| Draft | Hounds passed on from one pack to another |
| Dwell | when hounds are uncertain of a line and slow down |
| Enter | to initiate young hounds in the art of hunting |
| Feather | hound waving his stern when not sure enough to speak on a faint scent |
| Field | people following the hunt |
| Form | shallow nest or depression in the ground used by a hare |
| Full cry | All hounds giving tongue on a line |
| Game | quarry |
| Give tongue | hounds using their voices |
| Gone to ground | when the quarry has entered an underground shelter |
| Hold up | warning to hounds to stay still |
| Holloa | shout to indicate that a whip or one of the field has seen the quarry |
| Huntsman | person hunting the hounds |
| Jack | male hare |
| Kennel huntsman | person responsible for maintenance of hounds |
| Lay on | to start hounds on a scent |
| Leathers | Ears |
| Leveret | young hare |
| Lift | to take the pack from one point to another where the hunter believes the hare has gone or been seen. |
| Mask | head of the hare |
| Moving off | when hounds are taken from the meet to the first draw |
| Outcross | the mating of unrelated dogs |
| Pack | number of hounds kept together for the purpose of hunting as a team |
| Pad | foot of hare or hound |
| Puss | Hare |
| Put up | when hare is moved from form by the hounds |
| Scent | smell given off by the quarry |
| Speak | give tongue |
| Split | hounds separate and follow different scents |
| Stern | Tail |
| Tally ho | signal indicating quarry has been sighted |
| Throw up | when hounds no longer own a scent and indicate that they are beaten |
| Timber | a dog excelling in bone is said to have good timber |
| Tongue | to give voice to a scent |
| Viewed away | quarry has been viewed and is going away(or gone away) |
| Ware riot | shout to stop hound hunting anything other than their proper quarry |
| Whipper in | servant who assists the huntsman |
| Working a line | following scent |
